HANG TEN FOR HEALING
Exhibit Opening Night: Friday, May 2, 2025
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
The show is a collection of surfboards and skateboards repurposed into unique works of art amidst a sea of large colorful mural paintings. Jenny Brown, is a Virginia Beach native, mother of teens and owner of a local psychiatric practice. Spending the last 30 years working in the field of mental health she has become alarmed by the increasing number of overdoses and suicides of youth.
Jenny shares a passion for art with her daughter Banks - together they considered ways to reach teen youth and the greater community- in collaboration with Tessa this surf/skate/mural art show/benefit has emerged.
Prior to motherhood Jenny used painting as an outlet for stress and participated in local shows including the Boardwalk Art Show, Stockley Gardens and the Artists Galllery. More recently she has switched media collecting old surfboards, transforming them into art using bottlecaps, glass, found objects and resin.
Banks attended one of Tessa’s summer mural workshops and is a natural at designing and painting large scale images. She and four of her peers, all former VBMS students - Valentina Arciniegas Gil, Lila Fairchild, Josh Knight and Sophia Quincy-Clemons - attend the Governors School for the Arts. These teens have generously donated their time and talents creating large murals and painted skateboard decks.
The show opening is the evening of May 2nd which is First Fridays in The ViBe Creative District and the start of Mental Health Awareness Month. Proceeds from the sale will go towards teen mental health, projects with youth and the teen artists.
